Many cases are being seen by local people as well as poultry keepers about the death of chicken as well as some other birds. Four Mainas were found dead by evening walkers lying on the P.C. Road. Sixteen Chickens were suddenly found dead by their owner at Nagarjun Road Extension basti.Ten states and one union territory are already affected by this menace. The Centre has asked the states to be prepared for any eventuality. The Union Minister Giriraj Singh has told that the reason for its spread in India is the migratory birds. The govt. has told not to panic as the bird flu is common in winter. Some birds carry the flu without developing sickness, and spread it in their droppings. Birds excrete even while flying. The viruses are further spread to poultry and terrestrial birds from water birds, many of whom migrate and travel far. Sometimes, the virus infects mammals such as pigs, horses, cats and dogs.As in birds, where it generally infects the gut, the avian influenza attacks the respiratory tract of humans and may cause severe respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia or Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Early symptoms may include fever, cough, sore throat, and sometimes abdominal pain and diarrhoea.Antiviral drugs, especially oseltamivir, improve the prospects of survival in humans, as per the Union Health Ministry. The ministry has advised people working with poultry to use PPEs and follow hand hygiene.
